The Hidden Mental Health Crisis in the Music Industry

Behind the performances and the applause, musicians and music workers are struggling. It's time we talked about it openly.

The numbers are stark. Since 2007, the UK has lost over a third of its grassroots music venues. Not big arenas or festival fields — the small rooms. The 100-cap pubs, the sticky-floored clubs, the old theatres where you could stand close enough to see the sweat on a musician’s brow.

These venues are not closing because music is less popular. Live music has never been more consumed. Streaming numbers are through the roof. Festival culture is booming. But somewhere between the algorithm and the arena, the spaces where music actually starts are being quietly erased.

The reasons are structural. Rising business rates, spiralling rent in urban centres, noise complaints from newly built residential developments, and a planning system that has consistently failed to protect cultural space. The Agent of Change principle — which should mean developers must protect existing music venues from the noise complaints of new residents — exists in law but is poorly enforced.

When a grassroots venue closes, it doesn’t just mean one less gig. It means the local circuit collapses. Artists can’t develop. Engineers don’t have rooms to learn in. Promoters lose their proving grounds. The ripple effect reaches every level of the industry.

Move 2 the Groove exists partly to sound this alarm as loudly as we can. We champion the venues that are still standing, the people who run them against the odds, and the communities that fill them. But we also believe in structural change. The venues need protection. And that requires sustained public attention and political will.

If there’s a venue in your town that matters — go to a gig this month. Tell people about it. Because the best thing you can do for grassroots music right now is show up.
